DIVIDING DECIMALS

A. Use the following steps when dividing decimals:

STEP 1: Set up to divide, ensuring that the number after the division sign (+) is the divisor (the number to be divided into the other number).

STEP 2: Move the decimal point in the divisor, as many places to the right as is necessary to make it a whole number.

STEP 3: Move the decimal point in the dividend (the number being divided) the same number of places to the right.

STEP 4: Place the decimal in the answer directly above the decimal in the dividend and complete the division.

Example: 12.6 : 2.3

Step I: 12.6/2.3

Step II: 126/2.3 moves one decimal point of 12.6 to form 126

Step III: 126/2.3 moves one decimal point of 2.3 to form 23

Step IV: 126/23 =5.48 takes only two decimals
