CHANGING AN IMPROPER FRACTION TO A MIXED NUMBER

A. To change an improper fraction to a mixed number:

    1. Divide the denominator into the numerator possible.
(2) Reduce the remaining fraction to its lowest terms. Example: Improper Fraction Mixed Number

3/2 => 3 : 2 =>1 and 1/2 => 1 1/2

CHANGING MIXED NUMBERS TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS

  1. To change a mixed number to an improper fraction:
    1. Multiply the denominator by the whole number
    2. Then add the numerator to this amount.
    3. This product will become the new numerator and the denominator will remain the same. For example:
Example: Mixed Number Improper fraction (1) 1 1/2 => 2 x 1 = 2 + 1 => 3/2
