ADDING FRACTIONS

A. Use the following steps when adding fractions:

Step 1: Find a common denominator for all fractions.

Step 2: Add the numerators only.

Step 3: The denominator remains the same.

Step 4: Reduce the answer to lowest terms, if necessary.

Example: Add 1/2 and 1/4

2/4 + 1/4 => (2 + 1)/4 => 3/4 3/4 is lowest term

SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS

 A. Use the following steps when subtracting fractions:

Step 1: Find a common denominator for all fractions.

Step 2: Subtract the numerators only.

Step 3: The denominator remains the same.

Step 4: Reduce the answer to lowest terms, if necessary

  Example: Subtract 6/9 to 1/3

6/9 - 3/9 => (6-3)/9 => 3/9 => 1/3 is the lowest term.
