MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS
  1. Use the following steps when multiplying fractions:
STEP 1: Multiply numerators.

STEP 2: Multiply denominators.

STEP 3: Reduce to lowest terms, if necessary.

Example: 1/2 x 1/3 Step I Step II Step III

1 x 1 = 1 2 x 3 = 6 1/6 is lowest term

 

B. Use the following steps when multiplying a fraction by a whole STEP 1:***Change the whole number to a fraction by placing the number over one****

 

STEP 2: Multiply numerators.

STEP 3: Multiply denominators.

STEP 4: Reduce to lowest terms, if necessary.

Example: 7/8 x 20 =
Step I Step II Step III Step IV

20/1 7 x 20 =140 8 x 1 = 8 140/8 =>35/2 is the lowest term
